The Foundation is working with several marine biologists and veterinarians to help the PUNTA CANA RESORT in the Dominican Republic develop a nature conservancy program for injured wildlife such as Pelicans, Turtles and Manatee.
The Foundation is active in working with several islands in the Caribbean to develop local recycling activities and solid waste management techniques with an emphasis on converting waste plastic, paper, tires and glass into reusable end products. Currently work is underway in Jamaica, Guadeloupe, St. Thomas, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Barbados.
The Foundation has been working with the Hotel Industry in the Caribbean to develop more environmentally friendly attitudes. The Environmental Hotel Award Program sponsored by the American Express Company and the Caribbean Hotel Association has focused hotels on the environment. The Program rewards the hotel that best exemplifies environmental responsibility in four areas: STEWARDSHIP, AWARENESS, INFRASTRUCTURE and CONSERVATION. An award is also given to each hotel that excels in each individual category. STEWARDSHIP is the role that a hotel plays in its community to foster environmental awareness among the citizenry. AWARENESS is the level to which the hotel develops a sound internal policy and assures the participation by its employees and guests. INFRASTRUCTURE concentrates on the facility and its design to assure that the environment is respected, enhanced and not abused. CONSERVATION is the degree to which principles of reduction, reuse and recycling are being applied in every day operations. The hotel management is shown how environmentally responsible policies can significantly add to the bottom line profitability. One hotel in this program has saved over $2.5 million annually in water consumption by reuse of its grey water effluents; another saved $6,000 monthly by shifting from individual bottles and cans to larger size dispensing systems for their beverages; yet another hotel nearly doubled in size while experiencing an overall 20% reduction in electrical utility consumption.
